Standard railings fail children in two ways: the gaps are wide enough to pass through, and horizontal members give a foothold. A cable grill fixes both — the runs are vertical, so there is nothing to climb, and the spacing is set below the width of a small child's chest.
We specify 45mm spacing for homes with children under five. That figure comes from the same logic building codes use for balustrades: narrow enough to prevent passage, and narrow enough that a head cannot become trapped.

Is this better than a safety net for children?
It is more expensive and more durable. A net is the cost-effective choice and performs well; a grill is the right call if you want something permanent that also looks like part of the building.
What material are the nets made from?
Knotted high-density polyethylene, UV stabilised. HDPE is chemically inert, waterproof and does not degrade in sunlight the way untreated polypropylene does. Nets are tensioned on a stainless steel wire frame using screw pins, turnbuckles and hogging staples, so the installation stays tight rather than sagging after the first season.
How much does it cost?

How long will the installation last?
Five years is typical for HDPE netting in direct sun, longer on sheltered elevations. Invisible grills last considerably longer — the stainless cable is the limiting component and it does not corrode. Sun exposure is what ages netting, not rain.
Can a bird cut through the net with its beak?
No. HDPE at the gauge we use cannot be cut by a pigeon or crow. The failure mode for bird netting is never the mesh — it is a gap left at the perimeter, which is why edge sealing is the part of the job that actually matters.
